Chapter 1 – System Overview – April 5, 2010

– The GCU controller is the keypad below the PFD & MFD.

-FMS key on the GCU is for programming flight information. While the <-> key is used to switch between active and stand-by communication frequencies.

-The RANGE knob on the GCU allows you to zoom in or out on the map, and if pressed, becomes a joystick on the map.

Chapter 2 – PFD – April 5, 2010

– Comms:  The green frequency is the active com, while the blue is the stand-by that can be changed.

-Range Dial: allows you to change the range on the inset map in the lower left corner of the PFD.  Pressing the dial allows you to use it as a joystick on the map.

-FPL Key/FMS Knob: used to change the flight plan on the PFD.  However, you’ll probably only use this if you loose the GCU and MFD, where normal flight planning occurs.

-MENU Key: Allows you to change the brightness of the PFD & MFD.  They automatically adjust, but this key can be used to manually adjust them.

-Airspeed Indicator: An airspeed trend vector may appear to the right of the airspeed indicator tape in magenta showing where your airspeed will be in 6 seconds, based upon your current rate of acceleration is maintained.

-Attitude Indicator: if pitch attitudes exceed 50% above the horizon, or 30% below the horizon, red pitch warning chevrons (“V”) will pop up and guide you to level flight.

Bank Indicator: located above the attitude indicator, are marked at 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°, and 60° of bank angle.

-Slip Skid Indicator is a pyramid over a bar.  “Step on the bar” to correct flight.

ALT SEL Knob on the GCU moves the altitude bug.

-A vertical deviation indicator will appear on the left side of the altitude tape if you’re performing an instrument approach, to provide vertical guidance.  Magenta  arrow is when the vertical navigation is use, a green diamond is for ILS approaches, and a magenta diamond is for GPS WAAS approaches.

-PFD soft key, then HSI FRMT soft key to select between the 360 HSI and ARC HSI views.

-INSET Soft Key (sk):

•Controls information in the inset display in the lower left corner (the map).

•OFF sk turns the inset off or on, DCLTR declutters the inset, and TRAFFIC changes the map to be your primary traffic map.

-SENSOR Soft Key switches between the two AHRS.

-PFD Soft Key (sk):

•SYN VIS sk turns off or on the synthetic display.

•DFLTS sk  resets the PFD to standard default settings.

•WIND sk controls information about the wind information display.

•DME sk turns off or on DME information.

•BRG sk allows bearing information on the HSI.

•ALT UNIT sk changes altimeter setting units.

•STD BARO sk to set altimeter settings.

•BACK sk returns to the previous display.

•ALERTS sk displays any alerts.

-SYN VIS sk off the PFD sk turns on or off the synthetic vision of mountains and valleys behind the PFD.  (not sure why this wouldn’t be on ALL the time??)

•SYN VIS Flight Path Indicator displays the actual path of the plane as it moves through space as opposed to it’s attitude.  Its the green circle with a bar on left, right, and on top.

•Traffic will also appear on the PFD.

•On instrument approaches, the runway will appear on the PFD.

•Highway in the sky providing vertical and lateral guidance.  Fly through the boxes.

•Terrain and obsticale display turns red or yellow depending on how close you’re coming to it.

-Additional Soft Keys on the PFD:

•OBS-allows you to set a desired course on the HSI, can also suspend or unsuspend waypoint sequencing.

•CDI-used to select the navigation source to be displayed on the HSI such as VOR (green), GPS (magenta), or  LOC (also green).

•DME-used to select a DME source, either NAV1, NAV2, or DME hold.

•XPDR-controls the transponder.

•TMR/REF-timer and reference soft key brings up a the timer reference box, you can set airspeed bugs and programming altitude minimums for instrument approaches!!!

•NRST-brings up nearest airports box, use the FMS knob next to the PFD to select the nearest airport and press enter to view more info or D-> (“direct to” hard key) to make it the active airport.

•ALERTS-warnings are in red, cautions are in yellow, and advisories in white.

Chapter 3 – MFD – April 5, 2010

– To the left of the MFD are the navigation frequencies.

The map page is the default page of the MFD and can be achieved anytime by holding down the CLR key on the GCU.  “MAP – NAVIGATION MAP” will be displayed at the top of the page.

-Soft Keys:

•ENGINE- full page display of engine indicating systems.

•DCLTR-declutters removes some info from the CHT and EGT displays.

•ASSIST-will help you set cruise power for optimization.

•FUEL-allows you to access the original fuel info page.

•MAP-allows you to change the information displayed on the Map page, provides more soft keys to customize:

→TOPO-turns topographical info on or off, best off for night to reduce cabin lights.

→TRRAIN-turns on or off the TWAS, terrain warning.

→AIRWAYS-displays airways low (victor), airways high (jet routes), or airways off the Map page.

→STRMSCP-turns on or of the L3 Stormscope, lightening information.

→NEXRAD-echo tops, cloud tops, lightening, cell movements, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, and METARs

→XM LTNG- displays XM lightening information.  Either Stormscope or XM lightening information can be displayed, but not both.

→SHW CHRT-(optional) can show instrument departure and arrival procedures,  instrument approaches,  and airport diagrams. Provides more soft keys.

→CHLST-displays checklists, use the FMS knob to select the checklist you want.

Chapter 4 – PFD/MFD Control Unit – April 5, 2010

The GCU has the same knobs as the PFD.  When you use the GCU, the results occur on the MFD, but when you use the knobs on the PFD, the results occur on the inset map on the PFD.

-HDG-heading control knob, pressing it, syncs the heading bug to your current heading, or turn it to the desired heading for the auto pilot to head toward.

-CRS-allows you to select a course if required to on the HSI, you must have selected a VOR or LOC frequency or be in OBS mode for a GPS course, pressing this knob will set the course will center your course deviation on the HSI.

-ALT SEL knob-used to program altitude bug on the PFD, pressing syncs it to your current altitude.

-D→ DIRECT TO Key- pressing will bring up a box on either the PFD or MFD, type in the waypoint or twist it in on the FMS knob, then press ENT once to acknowledge, then again to activate the waypoint. Alternatively, you can press the FPL key to bring up the stored flight plan, then use the FMS knob to select the waypoint, then D→ to go directly to that point.

-You can navigate to a specific point on the map by pressing the RANGE knob to get the mouse started on a MAP page, move to the point you want, then press the D→.

-Adding Victor Airways: you must have the starting point of the victor airway in your current flight plan, then move the cursor just below that on the flight plan and press the MENU key, select LOAD AIRWAY, select the airway, select the enter and exit points, press ENT, then the FMS knob to remove the cursor.
