Akumal, MX – June 30th – July 6, 2008

30 Jun

Just arrived in Cancun, Mexico… HAPPY boys!

It was nearly dark when we first got to the house the first night – but with a pool in their front yard… they HAD to test it out! GooooooFeeee!

Welcome to our Mexican Hacienda!
This is what we call, ‘The naked toothbrush dance’. They did this every night we were there. I think it speaks for itself.
This is a restaurant that was very ‘Swiss Family Robinson-esque‘.
Climb & eat at your own risk!
At the top Bo said, ‘This is a boys only clubhouse… well except you Em, only one girl aloud.’
Poor Bobo has to pose for SO many pictures – he thinks it’s torturous! Ty’s always all smiles!

Tulum – Ancient Mayan Ruins dating back to 564 A.D.

While Jim was out exercising – the boys and I scrambled to fill as many water-balloons as possible. It was hard for them not to huck them at each other throughout the process – but Jimbo got ransacked in the end!
SUCH Posers!

Ty worships his Dad SO much. And this particular morning he surrendered the ninos (kids) menu and insisted on getting exactly what Jim was getting. He had to muscle through some spicy huevos rancheros – but in the end he was ‘the same’ as Dad. It’s adorable… and really – who better to emulate!

The boys learned how to say a few Spanish words while we were there… the hitter?? ‘Botana‘ – it means ‘snack’. What would we do without snacks!?

Quickly, before I lose the nerve… I have to ‘blog’… about these two little nuggets. These two boys are the closest, and only thing I’ll ever have to kids of my own. And they’re more amazing to me – than I deserve. They’re open, and sweet, and somehow – they’ve made a spot for me. I’m not the mom, I’m not the… aunt, big-sister, nanny… I’m just me. A role I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to define, but as we understand it – it seems to work.
I’m SO lucky to have such fantastic little people in my world. They’re so very good to me.

Grand Canyon, AZ – Cruise America Boys Trip – June 9-15, 2008

09 Jun

I’m so proud of this trip (sigh).
There aren’t a lot of people that know who Jim is as a Dad. He’s not the business-man, He’s not the negotiater, He’s not the joker… He’s a Dad. He took the boys on this trip, just the three of them. One week, in a Cruise-America RV – He cruised from SLC to Brice Canyon – to Zion – to The Grand Canyon, and back home again. Cooked dinners, built fires, rode bikes, earned jr. ranger badges, and came back to me – happy!
My three favorite boys.

See the Elk in the background…

Los Angelas, CA – Annual Girls Trip – May 29-June 2, 2008

29 May

This was my 4th Annual Girls Trip – I think there were two trips pre-me, but for me this was #4. I owe this unique group of girlfriends to Stacey – who selflessly shared her friends with me four years ago. Stacey & I were chums in High School, but only within a large group of girls (you know who you are). We reunited almost 5 years ago, and I’ve been unbelievably loved since.
My friendship with Stacey is one of my most valuable life-assets… if my life were on fire, and I could go in for just a few things – her friendship would be one of them.

This colorful group of women are real, and loyal, and far from simple… they’ve each got character, and oppinion, and class… we share life-styles, and differ in life-styles. We agree and we disagree. They’re real women… and real friends.

Puerta Vallerta, MX – May 23 – 26, 2008

23 May

This was a quick trip to Mexico. A long weekend where we honestly did nothing but sleep-in, lay by the pool, and eat. For those of you who know him, this is a HUGE stretch for Jim. He works SO hard to take us to all these great places, and has a really hard time experiencing the leisurely side of life. Always working towards the next big thing!

Our room was paradise.

Chips & Salsa @ My Service… Ha! I’m spoiled!

Las Vegas, NV – Superbowl 2007

16 Apr

January 4th-5th, 2007

At the very last minute, realizing we had no Superbowl plans – Jim & I decided to fly to Vegas for the day to watch the game. We flew out on Sunday morning, stayed one night @ Mandalay Bay, and flew home Monday afternoon. Needless to say – I don’t remember who played, or who won (I’m notorious for watching an entire sporting event & then not knowing who won). Good Times!

The One-And-Only pic we took on this trip. Apparently my rule of thumb to ‘take @ least ONE picture’ when you go somewhere – isn’t always advantageous… Note to self – ‘Sometimes No picture is better than a hideous one. :) Ha! I’m not afraid.

The Sisters… April 2008

01 Apr

Okay, so this has nothing to do with ‘Travel’ – but I love my sisters. This was taken a few months after Katie got married… you can see that my baby sister has been crying. What can I say, you lose a little piece of your sister when she finds love. She’s Davidson now, and we love her – but miss her.

St. Lucia (Eastern Caribbean) March 1-8, 2008

01 Mar
Aaaahh, how could I have forgotten St. Lucia. I was driving today – scrolling through our trips in my head, and realized – I’d missed this one!
‘Here-Here’ to the Travel Blog, and to NOT letting memories slip through the cracks. I almost let this one go!

We go to these places and we’re like little kids (me especially). I have yet to be calm & collected, like a lady ought be. I gawk, and I giggle, and I ‘wow’ out loud! I can’t help it… and quite honestly – I hope I never can!
This is a view of Castries… The Capital City of St. Lucia, and a port of call for cargo boats, ferries, cruise ships, and yachts. 1/3 of St. Lucia’s people cram into this crowded city – as the country relies quite heavily on the tourism that comes through.

This was a small ‘Condiment Stand’ (as if we’ve ever heard of such a thing) where I bought my Momma some Banana Ketchup… something very popular on the island – due to their major natural supply of banana plants. That’s right folks – bananas grow on PLANTS – not trees… news to me! The St. Lucian’s had to get creative when they lost ‘The Banana Wars’ in the 90’s… hence, a Condiment Stand selling Banana Ketchup! Tastes JUST like our traditional tomato Ketchup!

‘The Banana Wars’
The Banana Story – is actually pretty sad for the people of St. Lucia… and was something we heard a lot about from the locals while we were on tours and such. I didn’t really understand while we were there -but have since done some reading.

It started with Bananas in Europe…
St. Lucia didn’t become its own state until 1979. Up until then – Great Britain had control over the island as well as a few neighboring islands.

So in the 1950’s – Great Britain, seeing the island as ‘one of their own’, encouraged the island to focus on banana production. They limited imports from elsewhere, and gave the islands preferential treatment in banana growing. They took the stance that banana production was essential to the islands’ economy & social well being. In turn, the people responded by making banana growing ‘THE way’ to make a living on the island. By the 80’s 1/3 of St. Lucia’s people worked in banana plantations.

But in the early 90’s, Chiquita Banana & it’s close competitor Dole Foods, both poured money into production – and flooded the European market with bananas. With more bananas – than buyers… prices – and in turn, profits – plummeted.

Since then – St. Lucia has struggled… but has promoted tourism, and is now primarily reliant upon visitors like us!
A lot of tourism, and a little Banana Ketchup!

We took a Jeep Safari for a day – this was our educational day, and one of my favorites! The Jeep in the pic was the lead, and we followed behind – where I was busy fearing for my life. High-speed hairpin turns, overlooking cliffs of jungle – THAT was not in the brochure.
One of the Guides.

This was a guy on the side of the road where we stopped to take a dip… he was carving bird-feeders out of coconut shells. You can see his fire burning in the background… this is to keep the snakes away, while he carves!

Horseback Riding.

A little tough staying on these suckers once the saddles come off… but quite the experience!

This was the view from our room. It was brilliant and subtle. Something I thought could only be seen in the movies… with false lighting, and staged props. But nope, it exists.

This is us golfing… FYI – Jim doesn’t like golf much – and I’m a big fan! He’s SUCH a good sport about it! One of these days he’ll get ‘the bug’!

Okay! THIS is hilarious! This is right before Jimbo does the unthinkable…

…and this is our ever-so-sweet caddy, Elijah. He’s fetching Jim’s club – shortly after it slipped from his hands on a fairway shot… we’ll just say this was a first for Elijah!

This is my face after the game of golf…

And this is Jimbo’s face after the game of golf…

Awwww, come on – He’s good at everything else – he can handle a bad game of golf, really!

…The End

Palm Springs, CA – February 8-10, 2008

08 Feb

First time to Palm Springs… another spontaneous adventure we came up with just hours before we left. We were supposed to fly to Nebraska to visit Vernon & Barb, and The Blatny’s – but weather won. Conveniently, the weather in Palm Springs was clear skies, no wind, and 80 degrees. Wahoo! 80 degrees in february is just my style! We stayed at The Marriott Desert Palm Villas, and it was gorgeous.

Jim & I hiked Palm Canyon, a trail in Indian Canyons. Indian Canyons is owned by the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians whose ancestors settled in the area centuries ago. I’m not surprised this area was their spot of choice. It is beautiful and warm with an abundance of water, and to the visitors eye is the perfect combination of sand, water, rock, and green. What I’ll remember most – is the desert palm trees, shaggy & weathered – yet strong and vibrant. Don’t go to Palm Springs without visiting Indian Canyons.I spent a fabulous afternoon pool-side soaking in the sunshine… in my little world – it doesn’t get much better than that!

San Diego, CA – Jan 2-6, 2008

02 Jan
We took the boys to San Diego to see Sea World and the beach… we just wanted to go SOMEwhere, and California is less than a 2 hour flight in the plane.
Jim doesn’t like California… he claims that every time he’s been there it’s muggy & rainy, and not quite warm enough to actually get IN the ocean. Oh, and, ‘shit costs too much’ he says. True, this is all true – but I still love it. So I drug him there :)
Jim’s Aunt Paula & Uncle Rick, as well as his cousin Janet live there. What cool people! We honestly didn’t expect to hang out with them much – we thought maybe a dinner or a kid-day. But they made us feel so wanted and so welcome… like we were family that lived accross the street. We saw them every day, and didn’t want to leave them when the trip came to an end! Janet is my age and a girl ANY gal would love to have as a girlfriend. Aunt Paula is beautiful and sincere. And Uncle Rick is a hoot, a retired San Diego Detective who has seen California’s harshest crimes… he’s a GREAT story-teller!
Ahhh, He was right (always is) – it was muggy, and rainy, & too cold to swim.

Ty was GIDDY around Hailey… Ga-ga-gooshy! Much like He is around Stacey… He likes pretty girls.

What. Who let’s their kid eat THAT? You can see in his eyes – he knows this is a stretch!

I don’t think the ‘bunny-ears’ is funny… does anyone else?
Ahh, It get’s real smiles out of ’em – so what the hell. You take what you can get!
